Barn
Owl (Tyto alba)
Adapted from an original watercolor illustration in
the Golden Field Guide Eastern Birds
This slender, ghostly pale resident of belfries, barns, and grain
silos appears deceptively large—especially in flight—due to its oversized
wings and long legs. It hunts in open areas, and may roost in nest
boxes and abandoned buildings, even within cities. Primarily nocturnal,
Barn Owls can nab a mouse or rat in pitch-darkness, relying solely
on their acute hearing. Their call is a harsh, grating, hissing
screech.
