Barred
Owl (Strix varia)
Adapted
from an original watercolor illustration in the Golden Field Guide
Eastern Birds
A common year-round
resident of most deciduous forests, wooded swamps, and bottomlands—especially
in the deep South—this large, dark-eyed owl may be identified by its
boldly barred breast and streaked belly. It also lacks “ear” tufts.
In winter in Barred Owls may wander into city parks and suburbs. They
are most active at night, and are more often heard than seen; the
typical call is a rhythmic series of barks ending in a distinctive
drawl: hoo hoo hoohoo, hoo hoo hoohoo-awww.
