Beaver Pond, January
Reproduced actual size from an original plein air oil painting.

This beaver pond is just around the corner from my house, and I have painted it many times, in every season. On the first morning that I worked on Beaver Pond, January, the temperature was a frigid 12 degrees. But the warm glow of sunlight on the snow was so exquisite; I was able to focus on the scene and not on my stiff fingers and freezing toes. Still, when I returned to the studio, I felt I had somehow failed to capture the essence of the scene. Two days later, after my initial effort had dried, I returned to the pond. The air was warm that day, and surface of the creek had thawed some, reflecting the sky in a sinuous, vivid streak of blue that caught my eye and became the focus of the painting.
