the Golden Field Guide Eastern Birds
Our most widespread and frequently seen owl, the Great Horned prefers
mixed woodlands near open fields—although it may turn up almost anywhere.
This large and powerful species can tackle jackrabbits, skunks, stray
cats, and even other owls. It is easily identified by its massive
size, prominent “ear” tufts, white chin, and finely barred belly.
Its typical call is a series of deep resonant hoots: hoo, hoohoo, hoo
hoo.
