Plein Air Landscapes in Oil

Weekend Workshops with Jim Coe

For the past five years, I have been teaching workshops in plein air landscape painting. During that time, my workshop has evolved into a three session program that works well with most weekend schedules. We start Friday evening with a slide lecture and orientation, followed by two full-day sessions. Both Saturday and Sunday, I begin with a demonstration; by late morning students are painting on their own, and I circulate among them offering suggestions and critiques. Most students work on a second canvas after lunch. We close the workshop with a wrap-up and group critique.

Although I teach at several different venues, I have found that this basic formula seems to work well everywhere. If you have questions about my program, feel free to contact me. To register for a workshop, however, you will have to contact each venue directly.

Program schedule: Friday 7:00-9:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am-4:00 pm

This intensive weekend program explores the challenges of working in plein air directly from the landscape, and provides an introduction to the traditional methods and materials of alla prima (direct) painting in oil paints. Instruction will include a slide lecture discussing topics ranging from the history of plein air painting, to the preparation of painting panels for use in the field, to a step-by-step demonstration of the instructor painting from a landscape. And on both days, the painting sessions begin with a demonstration by the instructor. Students receive individual instruction as they work on their own paintings, following the demonstration. Appropriate for beginners as well as experienced painters.

For both weekends, the Friday evenning slide lecture will be at the school. The daytime sessions will be held off-site on the scenic grounds of the nearby Norman Rockwell Museum.

In case of rain, painting sessions will be held in the painting studio at the school.
